Both of the classrooms encourage children to be independent, with lots of resources for them to access to help them with their learning. Displays support children’s learning and allow them to showcase their learning and take pride in their work.
Each class has elected a school councillor and ECO councillor.
The school councillors represent the class’s views on decisions being made in school. This encourages children to have a voice about their experiences at Firs Primary School.
The ECO councillors also act as representatives on matters related to sustainability within our school. They are also responsible for making sure that their class and school are more sustainable by recycling old resources, reducing waste and electricity use, and minimising our carbon footprint.

Each class also has Dojo Masters. These children are role models for others to show our FIRSY values. They also help to guide visitors and new children around school. They are always enthusiastic to talk about their learning.

Pharaohs is a topic based on a History unit about the Egyptians. We will use a range of sources to extract information. We will then make inferences about how they used to live and learn what life was like in this era.
This will link well to our Geography topic. We will look at a range of biomes and those that are present in Africa. We will study the River Nile and see just how important this was to Egyptians many years ago.
In Art, we will learn a range of skills. Starting by learning how to sketch artefacts using shading techniques. We will then build up to using clay to join slips of clay together to create our pieces. We will use this to create our own amulet as well as a clay model or a sarcophagus.
Memorable Experience
We will have a drama group called ‘Past Productions’ in to help us find out what life was like in the Egyptian period.
In this exciting unit, we will be learning all about Earth and Space! There will be opportunity to conduct research on different planets within our solar system, find out more about the orbit of the Moon, Earth and the Sun. Understanding how night and day occur, why seasons happen and where the days, months and years come from. This is a large Science unit that is specific to year 5 and 6.
There will be links to Geography. Understanding why we have longitude and latitude lines on maps, researching time zones and identifying where famous scientists come from using their map work.
Memorable Experience
We will be taking a trip to the National Space Centre! Here we will continue to look at our Science Topic about Space, looking at interactive resources to find out more about planets and how we have travelled to the moon through rockets!
In this topic, we will learn all about different periods of time. Our theme will be identity and equality, examining how genders have been portrayed throughout the years and comparing how things changed through time. We will also look at key moments in history where fashion has changed as a result of law, culture and protests/movements. We will be primarily focussing on what identity means and how identity can be shown through fashion. Our history learning will also link to our D.T and Art and Design where we will be inspired by fashion designers to create our own design that reflects our identity.
Memorable Experiences
We will be going to Derby Museum for the day to take part in a workshop called "Electro-embroidery lab." Here we will be inspired by Derby born Rebecca Crompton and explore different styles and capabilities of stitch. They will then begin a journey of 21st century skills design to create their own individual piece with a sew in battery, LED light and conductive thread, thinking about the science of electricity to influence their stitch and create a workable circuit!
In our topic, Peasants, Princes and Pestilence, we will be focusing on History. We will be looking at the plague village of Eyam and how the locals of Derbyshire had to heroically quarantine themselves to prevent the spread of the plague!
Memorable Experiences
We will be off on a trip to the famous Eyam in Derbyshire! Let’s see what the village has to offer as we look through and find Mompesson’s well.
In this unit of work, we will be looking closely at our Geography unit – reading maps and using 6 figure references. This will enable us to read and interpret maps, finding key locations and understand keys on various types of maps.
We will also learn about seasonality of foods and use our new knowledge to cook a summer soup!
In science we will learn about the different properties of materials and reversible and irreversible changes.
Memorable Experience
To link with our science learning, we shall have a company called "Science Boffins" come into school. They will be getting the children all excited about science as well as it being an opportunity apply and further their science knowledge!
It is essential that all children continue to practice their learning at home to remember and embed what they have learnt in school that week. For Splendid Spruces and Wonderful Willows, home learning will be given to the children on a Friday and must be returned by the following Thursday. Children will be asked to attend home learning club during their lunch time if they do not complete their home learning. Children will get both Maths and English home learning that week therefore all children should be able to complete it. If they are struggling, they are welcome to join in with home learning club for extra support. If you need any more support or guidance with home learning, please message your child’s class teacher on Class Dojo.
Splendid Spruces and Wonderful Willows PE Day is Monday.
Please ensure that your child has a white or blue t-shirt and black or blue joggers/shorts and a pair of black trainers. Please see Class Dojo if you are unsure what your child needs. If you have any issues or questions regarding this, please contact your class teacher on Class Dojo.
