EYFS Bright Blossoms and Cheerful Cherries

Welcome to our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) page. We are a unit of Nursery (3 and 4 year olds) and Reception (4 and 5 year olds) children. Here you can find out all about our Reception classes and the learning that takes place.

In our EYFS unit, we aim for all children to be ready, respectful, and safe. Ready to take the next steps in their learning journey, ready to embrace challenges, and ready to challenge themselves.

We teach children to be respectful of others and to celebrate the many wonderful differences that make each child unique. We support children to feel safe through positive relationships and a stimulating environment, encouraging them to explore, manage risks, and make safe choices.

Our ultimate goal is for all children to become confident, independent learners who believe in themselves and their abilities.

 Our Learning Environment

We are very lucky to have a large learning environment for the children to explore. The photos below show our two classroom spaces and our outdoor area. All of these areas are available for children to choose their own independent learning through play.

All areas are open throughout the year, as we know that some children learn better outdoors than indoors. We play in all weathers, so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately. We have great fun playing in the rain as well as in the sunshine.

School Council

Each class has a representative who attends the school council meetings. They represent their class and help to make decisions on behalf of the children in the school. This gives children the opportunity to share their ideas and voice their opinions to help improve the school.

Our Curriculum 2024-2025

Click on the tabs below to find out more information about each topic. Throughout the year we will also add pictures of memorable experiences and hooks!

Autumn 1

πŸ“– I Wonder How the Story Ends? 🌱

This half term, our learning will be based around the question “I wonder how the story ends?” As the children begin their Reception journey, we will spend time getting to know our new class, making friends, learning our routines and discovering how we learn and play together.

Our key story will be The Enormous Turnip. We will learn to orally retell the story, joining in with repeated words and phrases and using our growing storytelling skills. Once we know the story really well, we will use our imaginations to change the characters who come to help pull up the enormous turnip, creating our own versions of the tale.

We will explore a range of traditional and fairy-tale stories, thinking about familiar characters, settings and events. We will also have fun listening for and creating rhyming words through stories, songs and games.

As we learn more about ourselves and each other, we will explore similarities and differences, recognising that everyone is unique. We will also begin to think about past and present, talking about our own experiences and noticing how things can change over time.

Throughout the half term, there will be lots of opportunities to talk, listen, retell, rhyme, imagine and create, as we begin to discover the wonderful world of stories together. πŸ“šπŸŒ±βœ¨

Autumn 2

πŸ“– I Wonder How the Story Ends? πŸŒ‰

This half term, we will continue our topic “I wonder how the story ends?”, building on the storytelling skills we developed during Autumn 1 and exploring new characters, adventures and ways to tell our own stories.

Our key story will be The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We will learn to retell the story using familiar words, phrases and actions before becoming storytellers ourselves. We will change the characters in the story and use our imaginations to create our own versions of what might happen at the bridge.

Through this and other traditional tales, we will explore the idea of “goodies and baddies”, talking about characters' actions, choices and feelings. We will think about what makes a character seem good or bad and whether characters always behave in the way we expect.

As Christmas approaches, we will move from traditional tales to a short non-fiction writing unit inspired by Dear Santa by Rod Campbell. We will explore what makes a letter and learn how to write our own letters to Santa, giving our writing a meaningful and exciting purpose. πŸŽ…βœ‰οΈ

Throughout the half term, we will continue to develop our confidence as storytellers, readers and writers, using our growing knowledge of stories to predict, retell, innovate and create. We can't wait to find out where our stories will take us next! πŸŒ‰πŸ“šβœ¨

πŸŒ™ I Wonder What Happens When I Fall Asleep? ⭐

This half term, our learning will be based around the question “I wonder what happens when I fall asleep?” We will be exploring the fascinating world of nighttime and discovering what happens while many of us are tucked up in bed!

Our key story will be How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers. We will follow the little boy as he tries lots of different ways to catch a star and use our imaginations to think of new and exciting ways he could try to catch one. This will give us lots of opportunities for storytelling, talk, creativity and writing.

Throughout the topic, we will explore night and day, thinking about how the world changes when the sun goes down and why sleep is important. We will discover nocturnal animals, finding out which animals are awake at night, where they live and how their habitats help them to survive.

We will also investigate jobs that happen at night, discovering some of the people who are busy working while we are asleep and why their jobs are important.

Finally, we will look beyond our own world and journey into space! πŸš€ We will learn about the Moon, stars and planets and encourage the children to ask questions, investigate and share their own ideas about the amazing world above us.

Throughout our learning, there will be lots of opportunities to wonder, explore, investigate, create and talk, as we discover just how much happens when we fall asleep! πŸŒ™πŸ¦‰βπŸš€

🚜 I Wonder What Happens on a Farm? πŸ„

This half term, our learning will be based around the question “I wonder what happens on a farm?” We will explore life on a farm, discovering the animals, crops, people and places that help farms to work.

Our key story will be What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson. We will learn to orally retell the story, joining in with familiar words, phrases and animal sounds. Once we know the story really well, we will become storytellers, changing the farm animals and creating a new map of the farm for our own version of the story.

To help bring our learning to life, we will visit a farm! 🚜 We will explore how a real farm is laid out, look closely at the different areas and meet some of the animals. We will use what we discover to help us decide which animals and features to include in our own farm maps and stories.

We will learn about a variety of farm animals, including their young and what they need to grow and stay healthy. We will also investigate crops, discover some of the foods that are grown on farms and begin to understand where our food comes from.

We will find out about the different jobs people do on a farm and how farmers care for their animals and crops. We will then follow the journey of food beyond the farm, exploring shops and supermarkets and thinking about how some of the things we buy make their way from the farm to us. πŸ₯•πŸŒΎπŸ›’

Throughout the half term, there will be lots of opportunities to explore, investigate, map, retell, create and ask questions, as we discover just how busy life on a farm can be! πŸ‘πŸ–πŸ“πŸŒΎ

🐞 I Wonder What a Minibeast Is? πŸ›

This half term, our learning will be based around the question “I wonder what a minibeast is?” We will become minibeast explorers, investigating the tiny creatures that live all around us and discovering the important part they play in our natural world.

Our key text will be the poem I Love Bugs by Emma Dodd. We will enjoy listening to and joining in with the poem, exploring the exciting words used to describe the different bugs. As our knowledge grows, we will use the poem to inspire us to create our own version featuring our favourite minibeasts.

Each week, we will focus on different insects and minibeasts, finding out what they look like, how they move, what they eat and some of their special features. We will use what we learn to compare different creatures and build a bank of exciting words and ideas ready for our own poems. πŸπŸ¦‹πŸœ

We will also explore habitats, investigating where different minibeasts live and why they choose particular places. We will get outside to look closely at the natural world, searching for signs of minibeast life and learning how we can care for the creatures and habitats around us.

Our investigations will also lead us to explore plants, discovering how they grow and why plants are so important to many of the minibeasts we find in our environment. 🌱🌼

At the end of our learning, the children will choose their favourite minibeasts and use all the wonderful facts and vocabulary they have collected to create their very own I Love Bugs inspired poem.

Throughout the half term, there will be lots of opportunities to observe, investigate, compare, describe, explore and create, as we discover the fascinating miniature world that is right beneath our feet! πŸ”ŽπŸžπŸŒΏπŸ¦‹

🌊 I Wonder What a Rock Pool Is? 🐚

This half term, our learning will be based around the question “I wonder what a rock pool is?” We will explore beaches, rock pools and the wonderful creatures that can be found along our coastline.

Our key story will be Billy’s Bucket by Kes Gray and Garry Parsons. In the story, Billy discovers an amazing underwater world inside his bucket. We will learn to orally retell the story before using our imaginations and growing knowledge of the sea to change what Billy sees inside his bucket. What might be hiding beneath the water in our own versions of the story? πŸ πŸ¦€πŸ™

We will investigate rock pools, discovering how they are formed and learning about some of the creatures and plants that make them their home. We will explore beaches and the natural world, thinking about the different features we might find at the seaside and how we can help to look after these special environments.

As we think about spending time outdoors and at the beach, we will also learn about sun protection and how we can keep ourselves safe in the sunshine. β˜€οΈπŸ§΄πŸ§’

We will explore postcards, finding out why people send them and what information they contain. We will use our own experiences and imaginations to talk and write about places we might visit and the exciting things we could see and do there. πŸ’Œ

  • Bright Blossoms –Tuesday

  • Cheerful Cherries – Tuesday

The children enjoy learning a range of skills through gymnastics, dance, and games. PE is led by Miss Marley and Mrs Newbury.

As part of the curriculum, children are currently developing their independence by removing their jumpers, socks, and shoes. This will continue until October half term.

After October half term, children will begin changing into their PE kits. They will need a white t-shirt, black shorts, joggers, or leggings, and black pumps. All items should be clearly labelled with your child’s name and placed into a PE bag, also labelled with their name.
