  • Nursery Ace Acorns

“Play is our brain’s favourite way of learning.”

Welcome to Ace Acorns. We are Foundation stage 1 children, aged 2-4 years.

Here you can find out all about our Nursery class and the learning that takes place. Information is also put onto Dojo weekly.

In our EYFS unit we intend for children to be ready, respectful and safe. Ready for the next stage in their learning journey. Ready to be challenged and to challenge themselves. It is important to us that children develop an early love of learning and grow in their independence during their time with us. In our nursery, we cultivate self-esteem, curiosity and respectful behaviour.

We teach the children to be respectful of others and of the many wonderful differences that make each child unique. We support children to feel safe through our positive relationships and our stimulating environment. We aspire for all children to feel safe to explore, manage their own risks and to make safe choices.

We are determined for our children to be confident, independent and to believe in themselves.

    Our Learning Environment

We are very lucky to have a large learning area for the children to use. We have an indoor area where the children can play with the construction materials, make and create, build up their hand strength using the play dough, be imaginative in the home corner, have snack and be investigative.

The children also have access to an outdoor area that is share with Reception. Here they can practice all their gross motor skills and develop their imagination.

All of these areas are where the children will choose their independent learning through play.

    Class Dojo

Every class has at least 1 dojo master. Their role is to help set a good example, support others in showing our FIRSY values, and keep the positive encouragement going.

    Autumn 2

I wonder how the story will end?

This half term we are continuing with our topic – I wonder how the story will end? This is so the children continue to develop their understanding of how stories are structured and the excitement that stories create.

We will also learn about important dates and different celebrations during this half term including Remembrance day, Diwali, Children in Need, Bonfire night and Christmas.

Our quality text for this half term is the ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff. This term we will learn to use actions and a story map to help us retell the story.

    Spring 1

I wonder how we'll get there?

This term in nursery we will be exploring how people travel. We will be exploring transport and how things move. In imaginative play, children will explore different ways to travel. Children will be taught how to stay safe on the road. They will apply their learning through play, talk and reading.

    Quality Text

In nursery, we are learning the story ‘The train ride’ or 'We all go travelling by' (for Nursery 1 children and our 2 year olds. Children will learn to retell stories through actions and words as well as learn repetitive phrases.

    Spring 2

I wonder why it looks like that?

In Nursery this term we will be learning about animals that might be in a zoo. Why do they look like that? What colour are they?

    Quality Text

Our Quality text this term is “Dear Zoo”, children will learn about a range of animals. We will explore the sounds they make to develop our early phonetic knowledge. Children will go on story walks to improve their ability to retell stories and talk about characters.

    Summer 1

I wonder where it comes from?

What do you buy in a supermarket? Who is your favourite superhero? What vegetables do you like to eat?

In nursery this half-term we will be investigating key vocabulary in play and through actions. Can you work together to help rescue the characters in our story?

    Quality Text

We will be looking at ‘Supertato’.

    Summer 2

I wonder what a reflection is?

This term we will be celebrating ourselves. What have we achieved this year? What are you good at? How have you been resilient and independent?

Using our quality text 'Incredible you!' children will celebrate what they are good at and link play-based skill to learning.

You can help your children at home by helping them recognise what they are good at. Maybe they are a great runner, dancer or artist!

    P.E.

Physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives. By creating games and providing opportunities for play both indoors and outdoors, adults can support children to develop their core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility. Gross motor skills provide the foundation for developing healthy bodies and social and emotional well-being. Fine motor control and precision helps with hand-eye co-ordination, which is later linked to early literacy. Repeated and varied opportunities to explore and play with small world activities, puzzles, arts and crafts and the practice of using small tools, with feedback and support from adults, allow children to develop proficiency, control and confidence.
